From Pulpit to Protected Area
In Amedzofe, our novel approach to conservation education – Conservation Evangelism – sparked a transformation. A sermon that wove together faith and environmental stewardship inspired a local church to donate 40 hectares of land. That gesture became the foundation of the OnePone Endangered Species Reserve, which now protects over 5,270 hectares of forest. This land not only shelters endangered frogs, pangolins, and butterflies, but has also become a model for community-led conservation. The community’s embrace of conservation has influenced nearby villages and earned OnePone classification as an IUCN Category 1a reserve—the highest level of protection. This success began with trust and a message that made science meaningful in people’s everyday lives.
