DR. CALEB OFORI-BOATENG

FOUNDER / CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO)
A leading African amphibian conservationist and Ghana’s first trained herpetologist. Founder of Herp Conservation Ghana, he has discovered new frog species, established protected habitats, and trained future conservation leaders. A Whitley Award winner, his community-driven approach bridges science and action to safeguard biodiversity.

Dr. Caleb Ofori-Boateng is one of Africa’s leading amphibian conservationists and a passionate advocate for the protection of threatened species and habitats. As the first formally trained herpetologist in Ghana, he founded Herp Conservation Ghana (Herp-Ghana) in 2006 to champion the conservation of amphibians and reptiles—groups often overlooked despite their ecological importance and alarming rates of decline.

With over 15 years of experience in conservation science, field research, community engagement, and environmental policy, Caleb has led groundbreaking work that has transformed amphibian conservation in Ghana and across West Africa. Under his leadership, Herp-Ghana has become a trailblazer, establishing Ghana’s first-ever sanctuary for endangered frogs and launching the country’s only amphibian-focused residential training program—the Ecology Field School—which has trained over 50 young African conservationists.

Dr. Ofori-Boateng’s work has led to the discovery and scientific description of several new frog species, including the critically endangered Phrynobatrachus afiabirago and Conraua sagyimase. He has also played a key role in the creation of municipal bylaws to protect endangered amphibians and helped restore over 100 acres of degraded habitat through community-led reforestation efforts.

His impact extends beyond Ghana. Caleb has worked on biodiversity and environmental impact assessments across West Africa, including in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and served as a regional projects manager for the Zoological Society of London’s EDGE of Existence Programme. He has collaborated with leading scientists from institutions such as the University of Oxford, University of Washington, McMaster University, and Conservation International.

Caleb’s work has earned him global recognition, including the prestigious Whitley Award (2019), the Future for Nature Award (2014), and a place as a finalist for the Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa (2022). He is also a former Biodiversity Fellow at the University of Oxford.

Dr. Ofori-Boateng is deeply committed to making conservation inclusive and community-driven. His innovative blend of science, storytelling, and grassroots action continues to inspire a new generation of African conservationists to stand up for wildlife and nature.
